Shop Smart Autumn 2011

A Shoppers draw is being planned linked to Shop Sharp membership. A Mini passport will be launched and after 12 visits to one or more of the participating shops, the passport will be an antry to a prize draw.

Make sure you have your card to participate in offers and if you have lost yours, simply request another one.

Over 50 businesses are participating in Caterham and new shops and businesses are welcome to join from around the town. Over 2,000 residents are on our mailing lists as members of Shop Smart.

Details of the passport scheme will be published early in October to members who have provided an eMail address and leaflets available in particiapting shops

A training & consulting scheme with retail "Guru's" Metamorphosis will see a couple of sessions for shops who are part of Shop Smart in October and later on.

If you are interested in Community facilities, an exciting project is under way to take over the Soper Hall in Harestone Valley Road as a community hub. The project is a great example of "Big Society" at work and a team has been working away on this for a over a year, having been kicked off by ABC. Please do visit their web site and register interest to help demonstrate that Caterham is an active town, where things happen! Our latest supporter is David Gold who has helped underwrite the proposal. The proposal was approved at a full council meeting on July 21st by Tandridge District Council and details are now being finalised.

The "Shabby to Smart" exercise throughout the town's shopping areas, with less clutter, new benches, planters and refurbishment of what we kept, is almost complete thanks to ABC. Some railings and posts are being painted and a traffic improvement scheme with a new mini roundabout is about to be created , to allow a right turn into Harestone Valley Road from Church Hill and help relieve the gridlock in Station Avenue.

Join ABC to be kept up to date with local community projects, Big Society in Caterham and news on projects like Soper Hall, on the Hill, or in the Valley.

All businesses in or around Caterham can join us, each one simply has to provide a Shop Smart member's loyalty benefit and we will provide them with a web page, to tell you.

The number of participating businesses has grown to 60, about twice the size at launch in August 2009. Adding community organisations and totalling up the doctors, dentists, chemists, transport and other information, it's now over 100 local organisations covered

Who's included now and who pays?

The scheme is free to join as a shopping member if you live or work nearby and shops and businesses pay a small fee. Its been funded through grant funds via ABC( A Better Caterham), some advertising and the joining fees from businesses.

A Newsletter at end September is planned to all those we have addresses for and will include any late news, especially about the Shopper's Passport. Over 2,000 are currently members, which is split almost equally between Valley, Hill and outside Caterham.

Joining at a shop or on-line

Is easy. Free membership cards can be obtained on the spot from JJ Browne, Touché, Peter Groom and La Fiaba in the Valley, plus Vivace Pianos, Swift Windows and Caterham Pine on the Hill. Cards are also available via post ( J J Browne, 10 Godstone Road, Caterham, Surrey, CR3 6RA) and the Internet.

You can pick up an application form in most participating shops. The cards come in a convenient "Big & Small" snap off pair, so one can go on a key ring and another in a wallet, or families can decide who has which. (Age 17 and over)

Shop Smart, shop local was launched on August 6th 2009, to reward shoppers and business loyalty. Its proving very popular among residents, shops and local businesses. Membership cards, a web site and town promotions are part of a scheme launched by the Caterham Business Partnership and ABC ( A Better Caterham). Leaflets are available widely in participating shops & both libraries. The campaign has been well supported by the Caterham Mirror, Advertiser, County Border News, Tandridge Chronicle, Caterham Independent and other local media, including BBC's Southern Counties Radio.

The scheme is backed by the local businesses taking part and has been supported by grants from Surrey CC, Tandridge DC, Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill Parish Councils. ABC obtained extra funds to assist us via SEEDA and the South East Rural Towns Partnership. At launch there were 31 shops in the scheme and now there are over 50. The panel below lists them.

Details of all the latest shops and their offers, together with a local shopping map and other material are in leaflets in shops or online. Several others are in discussions, so watch this space!

Our web site with this information, including the shops, offers and their locations around the town can be reached from the banner above. Check the individual shop's pages for details of what they offer. Please note that all information is subject to change, while we add extra shops and of course some offers are for seasonal items. There are now 32 participating shops and town centre businesses in the Valley and 23 on the Hill and the balance on our doorstep. Other parts of the town and nearby are welcome too. The scheme is open to include other Caterham businesses. Offers proposed range from straight forward discounts of up to 30%, to free items, promotions, vouchers for monthly draws, special terms and individual loyalty schemes.

Shop Smart Summer 2011.

Our new town guide has been published and is being distributed to Caterham households. A new quarterly prize draw will start this summer and several new shops and businesses are joining.

Make sure you have your card to participate in offers and if you have lost yours, simply request another one.

Around 60 businesses are now participating in Caterham and we are looking to expand. Over 2,000 are on our mailing lists as members of Shop Smart.

Shop Smart eNews will be published again at end of August and in November to members who have provided an address.

A training & consulting scheme with retail "Guru's" Metamorphosis to help local retailers, has begun. Several local shops are working with them. Contact us for further details.

This year's festival saw the Street Party, Open Caterham, Carnival, Food Market, Hill Climb, DeFest, concerts, events for young people and older alike. More than 25,000 visitors came to Caterham and 300 volunteers helped at the more than 100 events.

Shop Smart Winter 2011 update.

A new town guide will be published in March 2011 for distribution to 40,000 people, living in or near Caterham. We are looking at vouchers, linked offers and a prize draw.

Shop Smart eNews will be published again at end of January and in March to members who have provided an address.

A training & consulting scheme with retail "Guru's" Metamorphosis to help local retailers, is now active. Several local shops are working with Metamorphosis to improve their customer's overall ratings and interest in shopping locally. We found grants to help individual shops too.

More events to follow last year's Caterham Festival, De Fest and the Food Festival. Watch this space!

We are expanding business members once more in preparation for the spring 2011 leaflet. The scheme is free to join as a member if you live or work nearby and shops and businesses pay a small fee. Don't forget the "Extra" section which now includes: Lavender Box ( Beauty), Oliver Walker Photography, Nic Howard (Garden Design) and Buy Fine Wine.

Events - Where to meet us

Shop Smart has been one of the sponsors of Meet Caterham Business, an opportunity for business and individuals to meet each other locally. The last one was October 2010 and held at The Surrey National Golf Course.

A sampler session from Metamorphosis on Window Dressing was held in Oct 2010 and will be repeated, together with other topics chosen from their portfolio of retailer topics in a series of "Master Classes" to be held in our own Shop Smart/Metamorphosis "Institute". These will be scheduled starting in March and available for Shop Smart retailers and businesses at no charge as part of the ABC grants we obtained from SEEDA.

Shop Smart's Autumn Edition 2010

A new town guide is being designed for distribution to 40,000 people, living in or near Caterham by December.

Over 60 businesses are now participating in Caterham and we are in discussion with some extra locations further out.

We are launching a scheme with retail "Guru's" Metamorphosis to help local retailers.

Shop Smart is one of the sponsors of Meet Caterham Business, an opportunity for business and individuals to meet each other locally, being held at The Surrey National Golf Course on Oct 22nd. Register to come along and hear about Shop Smart and meet Metamorphosis too on our stand.

For those with retail interests, we are holding a retail and Shop Smart briefing the evening of Oct 26th in the Soper Hall. Newsletters in early November and December are planned to all those we have addresses for and will include any late news. Over 2,000 are currently members, which is split almost equally between Valley, Hill and outside Caterham.

Shop Smart, shop local was launched on August 6th 2009, to reward shoppers and business loyalty. Its proving very popular among residents, shops and local businesses. Membership cards, a web site and town promotions are part of a scheme launched by the Caterham Business Partnership and ABC ( A Better Caterham). Leaflets are available widely in participating shops & both libraries. The campaign has been well supported by the Caterham Mirror, Advertiser, County Border News, Tandridge Chronicle and other local media, including BBC's Southern Counties Radio.

The scheme is backed by the local businesses taking part and supported by grants from Surrey CC, Tandridge DC, Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill Parish Councils. ABC have obtained extra funds to assist us via SEEDA and the South East Rural Towns Partnership. At launch there were 31 shops in the scheme and now there are 60. The panel below lists them.

Details of all the latest shops and their offers, together with a local shopping map and other material are in leaflets in shops or online. Several others are in discussions, so watch this space!

Check the individual shop's pages for details of what they offer. Please note that all information is subject to change, while we add extra shops and of course some offers are for seasonal items. Our new leaflet is being distributed to 17,000 households

New Leaflet and information posters for shops

A new leaflet is on its way to 17,000 local households, with May's Caterham Independent. Leaflets are also being distributed to shops and others will go to libraries, surgeries and be handed out at local events. A Shop Smart poster for shops is being produced, to display their offer, to aid visibility of the scheme's benefits to everyone

The second leaflet is twice the original size. A full poster size version is being created for a few key locations too

More Businesses & open to wider types of business
An extension to Shop Smart to cover other businesses in or around Caterham, continuing the loyalty scheme concept.

The number of participating businesses has grown to almost 60, about twice the size at launch last August. Adding community organisations and totalling up the doctors, dentists, chemists, transport and other information, its now over 100 local organisations covered

Who's included now?
In the last month we have started to open the scheme up to other local businesses and you will find the initial new ones featured in the leaflet, together with all existing shops and businesses. This leaflet has a mini summary of all offers, plus location information. Its been funded through grant funds via ABC( A Better Caterham), some advertising and joining fees from the new businesses.

November/December is proposed for the next Shop Smart Guide. Vouchers are coming ( Arnold & Baldwin and Lilypad) and one of the new businesses ( Lifebroker) will be making a charitable donation for business via Shop Smart members to St Catherine's Hospice.

New shops over the last quarter, include Jennifer Hibbert (Clothes), Caterham Osteopaths, Papa John's (Pizza) & Essentials (Beauty)

Shop Smart is working with Caterham Festival to promote a Food Market in Croydon Road as part of Caterham Festival and we are on the back of the festival leaflet too. We are linking up with De Fest too.

Over 2,000 Members and eNewsletter planned in May
Membership is above 2,000 and we will now send out a second eNewsletter, to all those we have addresses for in early May, with some of the leaflet's content and any late news. One third of members are from outside Caterham and the balance evenly split between Hill & Valley.

Summer Competition.

Despite the weather we seem to have brought on, thanks to our pre Christmas snow machines, the town has seen the opening of new facilities and it's business as usual.

Latest shop to join is Papa John's, taking us to 47 shops. They are offering a significant discount of 30% from regular prices to all Shop Smart members, for orders over £15 collected from the shop.

Caterham Pounds ( Ended 31/12/2009)

We issued over 40,000 vouchers worth £1 each, thanks to The Caterham Independent, the County Border News, The Caterham Advertiser and the Caterham Mirror. The idea will return again later this year and local gift vouchers are also planned.

Other recent additions have included; new toyshop “Treasure Chest”, together with 2nd shop “Tots n’ Weenies”, plus Berrington’s Jewellers, all in the Valley. Essentials Beauty Shop in the Raglan Precinct on the Hill have also joined, together with Amazing Glazing, a new pottery and craft shop in Westway. This takes numbers to 27 in the Valley and 20 on the Hill. All shops offer members individual loyalty incentives and the scheme continues to expand.

It's a £1 money off voucher, a 5hr car park ticket, a free coffee, or valid for £2 in the Southern Coop. Get one if you can! We plan some in various local papers during November and in December. Do please check for conditions applying in individual shops

£1 Loyalty Vouchers are valid in most Shop Smart outlets for purchases of £10 and over, for members. Some conditions apply and may be instead of the regular Shop Smart offers. See in shops for detail & vouchers are generally valid to 31/12/2009. A full list is on this web site. For Waitrose, the voucher may be used by members when spending £20 in store, to obtain free parking of up to 5 hrs. In Southern Cooperative the voucher will be doubled to £2 during November for £10 spend, on qualifying items. In Tandridge Leisure its valid for a free cup of coffee, if you spend £3.50 in the cafe showing your Shop Smart card. Each time you use a loyalty Pound voucher in one shop, you are entitled to get another one, valid in any of the other shops - so you can keep getting a "Pound" benefit, while the scheme runs during November and December.

Thanks to the sucess of its loyalty card scheme, an extra week has been added to the Caterham Loyalty Trail. New shops have added generous prizes and the closing date is now Sept 25th.

Shop Smart, shop local was launched in Caterham on August 6th, to reward shoppers and business loyalty. About one thousand people have already applied to be members and its proving very popular among residents, shops and local businesses.

Of the first members there are similar numbers from both Hill & Valley and about a third of all applications are from other nearby places.

Leaflets, cards, a web site and a launch competition are part of a scheme launched by the Caterham Business Partnership and ABC ( A Better Caterham). Leaflets were distributed with the Caterham Independent newspaper's August edition, participating shops & both libraries. The campaign is also being well supported by the Caterham Mirror and Advertiser.

The scheme is backed by the local businesses taking part and supported by grants from Surrey CC, Tandridge DC, Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill Parish Councils.

At launch there were 31 shops in the scheme and now there are 40 The panel below lists each one. Most recent entrants are: MHP studios in Westway, who have donated a prize of a £150 voucher to the Loyalty trail competition, Barrett's Gun and Sporting goods shop in High St who have also donated a prize to the competition and Queen Elizabeth's foundation in Croydon Rd, who are offering everyone jute QEF bags worth £1.99 for a purchase of £10.

Several others are in discussions, so watch this space!

Details of all the latest shops and their offers, together with a local shopping map and other material are in the launch materials, plus an information sheet which covers the latest entrants and offers by all shops. This sheet is also a competition entry form, for the Loyalty Trail.(see below for competition details).

The competition will run to the 25th of September, so you have time to visit all the locations and discover shops and services locally you did not know were there. The latest form is available to download in the panel to the far right and shops also have copies. Later forms will have the latest shops added too. To enter the competition, complete whichever version of the form you have and hand in to any "Apply Here" point. There is now a second draw for those visiting at least 10 locations, see the trail sheets for details.

Caterham's Shop, Trade, Eat, Drink, Relax, Play & Ride Home local initiative, gains over 800 members since 6th August launch. Almost 40 shops now covered and a loyalty trail competition is open until Sept 20th with cash, vouchers and a Caterham 7 ride as prizes.

A new local initiative was launched in Caterham on August 6th, to reward shoppers and business loyalty. Over 550 people have already applied to be members.

Leaflets, cards, a web site and a launch competition are part of a scheme launched by the Caterham Business Partnership and ABC ( A Better Caterham). Leaflets were distributed with the Caterham Independent newspaper's publication and are also in participating shops & both libraries. Commuters at Caterham Station between 7.00am and 8.15am, were also offered leaflets on the 2nd day and the Station Booking Hall has application forms too.

The scheme is backed by the local businesses taking part and supported by grants from Surrey CC, Tandridge DC, Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill Parish Councils.

Shop Smart, Shop Local in Caterham nears launch with 30+ participating outlets

Caterham's Shop Smart initiative, providing rewards for local shoppers took a step forwards with over 30 shops and businesses in the Town joining the scheme. Details are now being finalised of all these shops and offers, together with a local shopping map and other material which will be published before the end of June.

A web site is near completion with this information too, including the shops, offers and their locations around the town. The scheme covers both Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill, with 18 outlets in the Valley and 12 on the Hill currently.

Loyalty Launch approaches in time for Caterham Festival

Preparations are well advanced for a loyalty card scheme, open to Caterham's businesses, residents and visitors.

What will the scheme consist of ?

Firstly local shops and businesses are invited to join a local scheme by Caterham Business Partnership and ABC - A Better Caterham. Final information packs to be distributed shortly. We hope that 30 plus local shops and services will join, from amongst local independent shops and services. A small joining fee will be charged to cover expenses. This is about 10 - 15% of the shops in the town today but more are very welcome.

Every shop or service joining the scheme will display the SHOP SMART poster and logos. Each one will decide their offer for customers. Perhaps it will be a £1 off a haircut, a free cup of coffee, a special offer, or some discount and participating businesses are free to choose.

Each business joining the scheme will also be featured in a variety of information sources, including a web site, a local directory and promotions and a competition to launch the scheme that will run during the Caterham Festival period from late May to the end of June.

Other towns that have tried this approach over the last three years have seen their local trade increase. Right now, with the overall economy in difficulty we would be happy to hold levels we have seen over the last year.

What about customers ?

A free loyalty card will be offered to anybody who lives here or visits the town. It will be a simple plastic membership card and issued to any person registering with the scheme. Minimal details will be needed to get a card but having address details will mean we can mail out information from time to time to the membership.

Although the cards will be numbered for identification, they will not show any other detail except the SHOP SMART Logo. Being in possession of a card will be taken as sufficient proof of being a member in general. We will comply with the data protection act and not misuse information. Our scheme is modelled on a similar one in the Forest of Dean, which covered several towns. The results there over 3 years have been a significant increase in local trade. Forest of Dean have provided very helpful background information we have used in developing our ideas.

How will the scheme be promoted ?

A couple of leaflets will be widely distributed within Caterham and surrounding area. Research shows that about half of those who visit and shop locally live either in the Town or very close by. We aim to get leaflets to 14,000 - 17,000 households, covering over 40,000 people explaining what the scheme is, the range of shops and services in Caterham and how to get a loyalty card. We will also target those from slightly further out in a variety of ways.

There has already been interest from local media and we will continue to seek coverage.

How many loyalty cards do you expect to issue ?

Other similar size towns like Haslemere have 7,500 plus loyalty cards in circulation, with 50 retail shops involved after 3 years. They began with around 4,000 cards and 30 shops. We will aim to start with 3,000 and 30 shops in the first year. Haslemere have also been very helpful in sharing their experiences.

What will the cards look like ?

They will be offered in a strip with one credit card size and two key ring size with a pre-punched hole.

How to get a loyalty card ?

Application forms will be distributed widely with local newspapers or newsletters and available in local shops displaying the SHOP SMART logos, or libraries and Volunteer Centre in Soper Hall.

A small number of shops displaying an "Apply Here" version of the SHOP SMART poster , will be able to issue cards on the spot and have stocks of cards and forms. This will save costs and speed up the availability of the cards to shoppers.

Otherwise forms can be posted in and cards will be posted back.

Is it just retail shops ?

No, it will cover services too, like hair dressers, taxis and perhaps some leisure outlets too. It is up to the participating business to create a loyalty offer.

We also intend to extend the reach of the scheme to include an effective directory of overall business in Caterham, which should assist the growing numbers of locally based small and medium sized businesses to interact.

Can I get help to decide on how to promote my shop or business ?

We have established contacts with Business Link and Train to Gain, both of whom are interested to work with us to help small businesses locally. We hope to establish some free events aimed at helping local shops, to be run in the town.

What about a web site ?

A web site is being built with a "Shop Face" of Caterham shop fronts and useful Caterham information. It will enable us to quickly tell people what is available and be part of how we deliver information about participating shops and member benefits. Behind the "shop front" we can provide brief details on each business. The intent is to develop towards a town "Hub" with information and services to promote what we have in Caterham, as well as being a foundation block for a Town Loyalty scheme.

I have heard about the "Origami leaflet" what is that?

In our research we liked the mini town directories that came from several towns in Derbyshire's High Peaks area, plus their overall SHOP SMART logo. With their permission we have used these to create a similar concept for Caterham. A draft is here and is part of what we will distribute to launch SHOP SMART. Are there any special incentives to get a card ?

Yes, there is a launch competition linked to the Caterham Festival, which is running for the first time this summer in Caterham.

Each place that signs up for the SHOP SMART scheme and displays a logo, will be listed in a Trail sheet, available from key shops, libraries and the Soper Hall Voluntary Service Centre. If loyalty scheme members and also those who are not, complete this by visiting all the participating SHOP SMART locations and getting a signature, they will be entered for a prize draw of a minimum of £100. The prize draw will be held at Caterham Carnival and the winner announced. The competition will run from late May to end of June. We have adapted this idea from a very successful window spotting competition idea run on Hayling Island to promote local shopping last Christmas. It links both Festival and SHOP SMART launches, when we hope visitors will be in the town.

Who is behind this scheme?

It came from discussions in ABC and the Caterham Business Partnership over Christmas, over what could be done in the short term to help the town's economy and those who live and work here. It has the support of both groups, who are looking at Hill and Valley areas. Tandridge District Council have been very supportive, as has Surrey County Council and our local MP Peter Ainsworth. Caterham Valley Parish Council is also supporting the scheme and we will hear shortly from Caterham Hill Parish Council. We have pledges of support from Business Link and Train to Gain in addition.

When will it be launched?

As soon as we can complete production of leaflets, cards and packs and sign up 30 shops. We anticipate this will be the end of May.

The Caterham Festival programme will include our Ad on the back cover, so look for those posters and begin to find the outlets who will be joining up. Here is the advert to round off this update:

Shops in our town centres and villages create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Over half a million people are employed in retail in our rural towns and villages. Evidence shows that for every £10 spent in an independent shop £25 is generated for the local economy compared to £14 spent in multinationals.

7. Local independent shops invest more in our communities
Sole traders and independent stores are proportionally more generous in their support for local charities, carnivals, schools and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial return for our community

8. Local shops are for everyone
Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for elderly, vulnerable and young people and those without transport. Keeping your shops open by buying locally helps the whole community.

9. Local shops value you more
Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping local means that you get a higher standard of service.

Loyalty returns to Caterham

The business and retail launch of a loyalty campaign for Caterham was on Feb 9th at the Miller Centre. Over 50 people gathered to hear of the intention to launch a scheme covering Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill.

Peter Ainsworth MP and Tony Elias from Tandridge supported the initiative from the Caterham Valley Business Partnership and ABC - A Better Caterham project. Its also supported by Business Link and Surrey Chambers of Commerce. The idea comes from the Town's business community.

The outcome of the meeting is for a loyalty scheme to be developed and available for all retail and Caterham business to join. Timescale will hopefully be short and all those interested to take part please register your interest if you have not already done so. Our goal is for 20 or more shops, services and businesses to take part and the initiative will cover Valley and Hill. The intent is to expand the group to cover the whole area and perhaps become the Caterham Business Partnership in the process.

There is potential to offer participation in the scheme to neighbouring places, like Warlingham, Whyteleafe and Woldingham.

Local Shopping & Trade Campaign

ABC Caterham and Caterham Business Partnership

The campaign began Feb 9th.

On February 9th there was a launch event for Retailers and Business to introduce the campaign, share information and for people to sign up to be involved. The campaign will cover both Hill and Valley and be a "Whole of Caterham" exercise.

Peter Ainsworth spoke in support of the proposal, which is in line with initiatives he has been endorsing recently.

The exercise is also endorsed and supported by Business Link, Surrey Chambers of Commerce, FSB ( Federation of Small Businesses), Tandridge District Council , Surrey Community action and our local Surrey County Councillor Sally Marks.

Other towns that have introduced schemes have seen their business and economic activity grow. In today's economic situation, we would be happy to hold the current levels and this initiative is about acting now, to help our town, its businesses and its community.
